Ok, so you do not want to use our website; I’m not offended.  Instead, I will show you how to search all of Craigslist using Google, and when I’m done, you will see why our search bar is so easy to use.  That being said, Google indexes millions of ads from classified ads sites every day, and as you can imagine, most of those are from Craigslist.org.  There has been controversy around the subject of 3rd party websites harvesting and indexing information on Craigslist.  However, in the end, Craigslist must have seen the enormous benefit that search engines bring to the site, and Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and others have been allowed to index and display posts.

Getting started with Google

You have now opened up your Google browser and are ready to search for an item on Craigslist.  Great.   Let’s use our previous example of a blue 2003 Toyota Corolla.  We all understand that if we simply typed “Blue 2003 Toyota Corolla” into Google, we would get results all over the web; that’s just how Google search works.  Stories of how someone customized their Blue 2003 Toyota Corolla, news stories of how bank robbers fled in a Blue 2003 Toyota Corolla (nice getaway car, by the way), or maybe consumer reviews on that specific car.  The point is, you will not find the ones for sale easily.  Your next logical step will be to type “Blue 2003 Toyota Corolla Craigslist.”

Google quickly found over 1 million results for our search.  But wait, something is missing… oh yes, none of my results are cars for sale on Craigslist!  How can this be?  I specifically asked Google to search Craigslist.  The answer is that you didn’t ask to search Craigslist.  Instead, Google took your random keywords and found what it thought were relevant matches to those keywords.  Google has placed the greatest importance on the make and model of the car and, as a side note, included the site.  As I scrolled down the results, I found a few Craigslist listings.  Read this article to see how to search Craigslist using Google.

Search Craigslist using BING

If you happen to be using a computer that defaults to Microsoft’s BING search engine, or you just prefer the look and feel of BING, you can search all of Craigslist using BING.  Just like Google, BING has indexed millions of Craigslist ads and pages.  These can be searched in the same manner as Google, and because it is a different search engine altogether, the results may be slightly different than Google.  This may be to your advantage if a Craigslist listing is indexed on BING and not Google.

Just like Google, BING uses a set of search operators to help you narrow down your search.  And because they compete head-to-head with Google, they kept the same type of operators to make it user-friendly.

In our case, we will tell Bing that we want to search only craigslist by typing the following:

Now we need to specify what keywords we want to be relevant in our search on Craigslist.  In this case, if we type in “Blue Toyota Tundra” into the search, we will get the following result:

What I liked about Google is that it placed a higher degree of importance on my IP address and showed initial results close to my location.  Bing search algorithm seems to place less importance on my location and shows me a list of results from all over the country.  BING found 329,000 results.  To do a true Apples-to-Apples comparison, a search of BING for 

site:craigslist.org Blue 2003 Toyota Corolla

retrieved 51,900 results compared to Google’s 13,100 results.   This shows that Google is actively filtering the results it shows you, while BING is not.  For this reason, you might find more results on BING, as they are as picky about what they index (yet).

If we narrow down our search above for the Tundra, we can use quotation marks to remove unwanted keyword results.  BING  has reduced the number of results only slightly to 309,000. However, it should be noted that a portion of the results seem to be search result pages on craigslist.  See below:

Though BING will show you more results, some of those results may not be very relevant, and it can take you a much longer time to sort through listings.

Craigslist wants you to pre-select multiple cities before you search.  This works with Craig’s ideology that you are to search within your local area.  It would be too onerous to select every city on Craigslist USA.  But you can easily enter 5 or so with ease.  Open the left navigation on the homepage and you will see Home, Locations, Saved Searches, Favorites, etc.  Select “Locations”.  Afterward, you will see a + symbol in the right corner.  Tap this button to select more cities.
